Periodontal Charting: Multitasking Before Multitasking Was Cool"

"...periodontal charting places incredible demands on the brain's processing system... In theory, a clinician's training enables them to perform the exam, but in reality the sensory and cognitive tasks required to collect data from the oral cavity and transfer it to the recoding log overcomes their training."

Turning It Round With Technology

Thoughts: After researching the available voice command periodontal training programs, Dr. Townsan selected PerioPal.

"PerioPal is easy to learn and use. Both of my hygienists were not computer literate, and yet, they learned the program and were capable of using it consistently and accurately in an hour,” he said. "The relationship between the hygienist and patient is maintained without interruption and intrusion of a third-party to do data input.”

A Profitable Hygiene System: Not an Undervalued Practice Resource, Part 2

COMPREHENSIVE PERIODONTAL EXAM…. PerioPal (PerioPal LLP; periopal.com), a voice-activated technology, allows the dental hygienist to collect periodontal data using a “verbal script.” This “verbal script” consists of commands, abbreviations, and short cuts to record data efficiently while the patient listens. It can be used in any order that the clinician chooses—in a single pass for pocket measurements, bleeding, recession, etc.

Charting: In the dental hygiene world, charting has come a long way. While the "holy grail" of charting has been voice activation, this has been difficult to accomplish in the real world. There are now many systems available for charting. For voice, one of my favorites is PerioPal, which uses a Web-based interface to work with almost every practice management system.

Importance of Probing

Another wonderful alternative is voice-activated periodontal charting systems. PerioPal® (www.periopal.com) comes to mind. This system allows the hygienist to speak the probing values while probing, and they are recorded digitally.

Dental Mythbusters: author puts beliefs to the test. (TECHNICALLY SPEAKING)

"PerioPal has approached the problem from a different angle. Periopal uses Voice Command Technology, which means the software is designed for the specific purpose of controlling the computer during the periodontal exam--and not for dictating letters. Its vocabulary is 200 words, which are all specific to dentistry and , consequently, because of this the system has much higher accuracy than voice dictation."

Voice-Activated Periodontal Charting:  Speaking the Words of Patient Education

"Most speech driven charting systems use voice dictation technology,… Others, such as PerioPal …, use a voice command system so that only commands available for input are recognized …. A command system uses abbreviated commands and short cut commands to chart the data. For example, if you wanted to record a 2-mm recession on a tooth you would say, "R2,” and it would be recorded as, "recession, 2 mm.” …
